In what will be the cinematic sendoff of the year (and perhaps the decade), Black Panther: Wakanda Forever The film examines the five stages of grief. Denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance are all emotions we’ve seen the characters experience onscreen over and over again. If these stages are portrayed correctly, the audience will be moved from sheer passion of the performance to tears or because the onscreen scenario is so relatable.
Whether it’s a good ugly cry or a few single falling drops, these stories evoke emotional responses where we find ourselves digging deep into our emotional archives to empathize with these characters or grieve. From tragic passings to new beginnings and every broken relationship in between, these tearjerker movies are the best in the game.
10/10 ‘Wakanda Forever’ (2022)
This year’s emotional tribute film, Wakanda Forever, Brings a common loss of cinematic icons to the screen. Mourning the loss of T’Chall (Chadwick Boseman), Wakanda prepares to defend against a new threat, this time rising from the sea. The world is reeling from the loss of a legendary, boundary-breaking character, and fans of the MCU and worldwide are also mourning Boseman’s absence.
A loving tribute to T’Chall and Boseman, Wakanda forever It’s a group therapy movie. as Shuri (Letitia Wright), Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o), and as the rest of the Wakandan nation figures out how to move forward, the audience figures out how to move forward as well. This is the first time these characters are back on screen, and it won’t be without a sea of tears.
9/10 ‘The Farewell’ (2019)
When Billy’s (Aquafina) Chinese grandmother is given a terminal diagnosis and weeks to live, the family decides to keep the news from her and gather once to say their goodbyes to the sham marriage. Winning a Golden Globe for her role, Awkwafina’s performance is poignant and precise, making it one to watch again and again. Farewell Puts the characters and audience members on the front lines of the grief to come.
The family’s decision to withhold their matriarch’s diagnosis provides a great set-up for a multi-genre film. Billy must deal with the loss of his childhood and the untimely death of his grandmother. heartwarming and raw, Farewell A story that unites generations with the common thread of family and difficult choices.
8/10 ‘Marriage Story’ (2019)
Leaving the audience with their love story at the end, wedding story (Directed by Noah Baumbach(Adam Driver) and Nicole Barber (Scarlett JohanssonWhen they fight over custody of their son Henry (Azhy Robertson). wedding story Shows that you don’t need a physical death to mourn a lost relationship.
As Charlie and Nicole struggle to find their way after marrying young, the two engage in a journey of self-discovery as they become who they are when they marry. Driver and Johansson masterfully portray a couple who desperately wish they weren’t going through this major life change, which many viewers can relate to. The couple’s saga brought new life to the cinematic marriage and many tears for Netflix streamers.
7/10 ‘A Star Is Born’ (2018)
With an emotionally flawless performance, Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga Bringing this remake to life, addiction and stardom put the complex love story on a path to critical acclaim. A star is born Describes the relationship between famous rocker Jackson “Jack” Maine (Cooper) after he meets Ellie (Gaga) and discovers her immense talent for singing and songwriting. Just as Ellie is catapulted to stardom, Jack begins to lean heavily on his vices, sending his career into a downward spiral.
Jack and Ellie’s relationship is complicated in many ways as one rises and the other falls, leading to an identity struggle for Jack as Ellie becomes unable to recognize him. heartbreaking romance, A star is born As the space between Ellie and Jack widens, denial and anger lean into the stages.
6/10 ‘Fatherhood’ (2020)
A tale of unexpected tragedy, fatherhood characteristics Kevin Hart Being a single father. Based on a memoir Two Kisses for Maddie: Memories of Loss and Love by Matt Logelin, Hart stars as Matt after the birth of his daughter, Maddie, and the challenges of raising her on his own despite the family’s attempts to intervene. The film presents all five stages of grief as Matt is forced to come to terms with his condition.
Hart resonated with Netflix original audiences as he tapped into his emotional side while constantly moving away from comedy. While the movie is full of comedy moments and timing with the main and supporting characters Lil Rail Howry, fatherhood It shows a new beginning for Matt as he navigates the world of parenthood, balancing a career and finding love again.
5/10 ‘Manchester by the Sea’ (2016)
A feature about surviving through life’s worst tragedies, Manchester by the sea Grief is about forgiving yourself. After the death of his brother, Lee (Casey Affleck) asked to look after his nephew Patrick (Lucas HedgesDespite Lee’s lifestyle and apparent depression.
In a whirlwind of emotions, Lee searches for an opportunity to move forward with guilt, grief and a second chance. Winning the Oscar for Best Actor, Affleck’s performance is a crush from start to finish. An exemplary vision of spiral death and loss can cause, Manchester by the sea Takes viewers on a journey with Lee through their most vulnerable emotions.
4/10 ‘Steel Magnolias’ (1989)
Reminding listeners to never underestimate the power of friendship, Steel Magnolias A classic film about loss and leaning on the people around you. Centered around a group of Southern women, M’Lynn (Sally Field) endures a terrible tragedy that tests his resolve as his closest friends rally around him.
An oldie but a goodie, this cast of characters not only holds M’Lynn’s hand as she grieves but also the audience’s hand as we remember a similar loss. These women are the embodiment of true friendship and how important it is in times of unexpected loss. from beginning to end, Steel Magnolias You will call your support system to remind them how much you love them.
3/10 ‘A Ghost Story’ (2017)
An exploration of love and unexpected loss, A ghost story Dynamic performances from its leadership, Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck. Grieving wife M (Mara) travels through the emotions of losing her husband C (Affleck). C returns to his home as a ghost in a white sheet, visiting M as she tries to come to terms with his death.
slow motion, A ghost story A film for anyone who needs a film to mourn. It’s a story of grief without the glitz and glamor that the romance genre usually feeds into the widow/widower story. The film, which mostly flies under the radar, depicts the journey through every stage of grief.
2/10 ‘PS I Love You’ (2007)
The eyes are not dry when it comes PS I love you. Although not a critics’ first choice for its tale of love, loss, and finding happiness again, it is popular with romance audiences. After the death of her husband Gerry (Gerard Butler), Holly (Hilary Swank) discovered that he had left her 10 strange messages designed to ease her pain and encourage her to pick up where life had left her before she died.
heartbreaking, PS I love you is based on Cecelia AhernA novel of the same name. Capitalizing on the mentality that our loved ones are with us even after they’re gone, the film explores that concept with Gerry’s afterlife appearance, even though Holly can’t see it. It’s an exaggerated story (do all spouses plan life adventures for us?) The movie still honors the growing pains that come with life after death.
1/10 ‘Nomadland’ (2020)
After the closing of the American Gypsum plant and the death of her husband Fern (Frances McDormand) travels the country, living out of her van and finding seasonal work in places like the Amazon. She has been invited to a support meeting for nomads like herself in Arizona. There she discovers a lot about the life she has set out to live and the journey that lies ahead for her. Nomadland Based on the journalist Jessica Bruderbook of Nomadland: Living America in the Twenty-First Century.
While this excellent installment in McDormand’s filmography doesn’t hinge on the death of Fern’s husband, it does have a message for those grieving the loss of a life without losing it. Fern is a spirit personified who examines the stages of grief only for death.
