Two weeks ago, the University of Sioux Falls was the only undefeated team remaining in the NSIC, but after Saturday’s 38-24 loss to MSU-Mankato at Bob Young Field, the Cougars find themselves one of a handful of teams all sitting on top. conference 7.-2.
That includes the Mavericks, who won in Sioux Falls for the second straight week, using a 21-point first quarter like they did last Saturday against Augustana, and holding the Cougars’ potent running game to just 96 yards on the ground.
The Cougars outgained MSU 409-344, but much of that came after falling well behind and struggling to get back into it. Shen Butler Lawson rushed for 103 yards for the Mavs, while quarterback Hayden Ekern threw for 197 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another two scores.
A Thuro Reisdorfer touchdown in the second quarter put the Cougars up 21-14, but that was the last time they came within a field goal. Reisdorfer rushed for 88 yards on 16 carries, while Hunter Schneider had a career-high 10 catches for 108 yards and a touchdown. Adam Mullen went 30 of 46 for 313 yards in the game.
The Cougars are back at home next week against Wayne State for Senior Day.
