Kerry Badminton season kicks off in November with over 100 entries in Killarney | Jobi Cool

The November Handicap, the first competition of the Kerry Badminton season took place on Sunday and it was great to see such a strong turnout in each of the five divisions. It was a doubles event with a mixed final, so the winning men’s and women’s doubles pair were split and played a mixed final to decide the winners. There was just over 100 entries and the venue was buzzing from start to finish. A long day but a very successful and well run competition was enjoyed by all.

Section 5:

This was the biggest draw of the day with a large entry in both men’s and women’s doubles. Both sides played a round-robin tournament, playing all other pairings. Laura O’Connor (Ballybunion) and her partner Katrina Murphy (Killarney) won the women’s doubles, while Jomi Joy (Ballyhigue) and Lorcan Briscoe (Ballybunion) won the men’s doubles. It was then a mixed final with Laura O’Connor and Jomi John winning the final 21-9 21-13.

Section 4:

Another good entry here with some brilliant games. In the end, Caroline Lemass (Killarney) and partner Susan O’Connell (Iveragh) won the women’s team, with Mike Reardon (Listowell) and partner Paul Thomas (Trailley) in the mixed final with Mike Reardon and Caroline Lemass coming 21st. -16 21-8.

Section 3:

Division 3 was very closely contested, with only a narrow margin separating the winners in both the men’s and women’s doubles. Paula O’Sullivan (Ballyhigue) and Bridget McCarthy (Moyven) ran out winners after some very good close doubles and it was the same on the men’s side with Kieran Crean (Killarney) and Paul Hayes (Listowell) winning their side. It was a very close mixed final with Kieran Crehan and Bridget McCarthy winning 21-17 and 23-21.

2+1 division

In Divisions 1 and 2, the entry was small, so everyone on each side of the doubles played each other, and the 2 men with the highest scores went to 1 side, as did the 2 women on the other side. Aidan McCarthy (Royal Castleisland) and Ethan Tritschler (Listowell) had the highest scores in the men’s competition, while Edel Kenny (Royal Castleisland) and Helen Brown (Moyvan) had the ladies. After a brilliant and entertaining final, Ethan Trischler and Helen Brown won a very close contest 21-18 21-19.

A big thank you to everyone who helped make the day run smoothly and thanks to all the players for playing, it was great to see such a good entry on the day. We’re at it again next Sunday with a mixed doubles competition where you draw a partner. We hope to see you all back there next Sunday at the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre.
