Exclusive: Cher on Dance at the Movies – “I’ll Always Go All Out” | Jobi Cool

I can’t remember a time when I couldn’t sing and dance. They are my first memories. I remember dancing around my living room West Side Story (1961). I used to sing all the parts and dance every single dance when no one was around.

I remember my mom would hold me by my fingers and we would bounce to the music.

From that early age, I have spent most of my life dancing. Someone summed it up well: When they compared me to why John Travolta was such a great dancer, they would describe all his expertise and form. Then they said, “Cher is just crazy.” What they meant was, I’m more about losing myself in the moment. I think this is true. I will always go all out.

I don’t know if there was ever a time when I thought, “Boy, I feel really confident now.” It just happened. Acting makes me really happy, I’m always scared to go on stage. But there is something special about the dance floor. It’s like taking yourself off the planet.

There were two New York clubs I could always go to alone: Studio 54 and Heartbreak. Here are several photos of me taken at one of my favorite nights of dancing at the studio. I’m wearing old jeans, suspenders, a henley and a cowboy hat. I also wore springolators, although I imagine most of you reading this don’t know what they are: backless mules with an elastic insert that tucks your feet in. Perfect for a night of dancing. I could dance and dance in those heels and not even know where I was or what I was doing.

I have danced in movies. People always speak fondly of the last scene Mermaids (1990), where Noni (Winona Ryder), Christina (Ricci), and I are dancing in the kitchen. I think people remember it because we didn’t actually rehearse it – we were so close at the time, it was completely spontaneous. We never thought that people would fall in love with that scene. We were having such a good time doing it, we didn’t even think about it. Christina was mad. Noni was crazy, and I was crazy! We were very much at home in our Mermaids house. But in terms of the dance floor in the movie, Saturday Night Fever (1977) was. It felt like this when I got out West Side Story All over again: something that comes out of nowhere and hits the right place, at the right time. Of course, John dances with Uma again Pulp Fiction (1994).

I’ve bumped into some pretty interesting people on the dance floor over the years. In the studio days, I was always running with friends: Liza Minnelli, Halston, Francis Ford Coppola. Prince – He was quite a feast for the eyes. Some of my favorite memories have been while traveling. In Saint Tropez, Michelle Pfeiffer and I would go to a place called Les Caves du Roy at the Hotel Byblos. We got there before the night started, and we danced until our hair was wet. And then when people come in, we go. In Las Vegas, I do two shows a night, seven days a week, one to two months, a really grueling schedule, then go out dancing with my dancers. We all brought our own sunglasses, because when we went out in the morning, the sun was very bright.

The truth is, I can always be with someone and be in my own world within five minutes. I could dance with joy even by myself. It doesn’t matter to me. The perfect dance floor is not too crowded, without too many people looking at me. That said, when I start dancing and I really get into it, I don’t notice who’s there. If I have to think about people watching me all the time, I can’t be free.
