BWF World Tour Finals moved from Guangzhou to Bangkok due to COVID-19 | Jobi Cool

The upcoming BWF World Tour finals have been moved from Guangzhou to Bangkok due to COVID-19 and will begin on December 7, a week earlier than originally scheduled, badminton’s world body announced on Tuesday.

The tournament, which was supposed to start on December 14, was postponed due to stadium availability issues.

The season-ending event will now be held at the Nimibutr Arena in Bangkok from December 7 to 11.

“The BWF, in consultation with the Chinese Badminton Association (CBA), has agreed to postpone the 2022 HSBC BWF World Tour Finals due to various challenges caused by the current pandemic,” the BWF said in a statement.

“The BWF would also like to thank the Badminton Association of Thailand for providing an alternate venue for the 2022 HSBC BWF World Tour Finals at such late notice.”

The BWF added that it will confirm the list of qualified athletes for the tournament after the end of the Australian Open on November 22.

HS Prannoy is likely to be India’s sole representative in the World Tour finals. Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu, the only other Indian to qualify for the season finale, pulled out of the tournament on Sunday as she is yet to fully recover from a stress fracture in her left ankle.

Sindhu, who won the season-ending event in 2018, has not competed since her run to win the gold medal at the CWG. He has recently returned to training but has decided to take more time ahead of the 2023 season, which will see the start of the Olympic qualifiers and also the Asian Games. This year, Sindhu has three titles under her belt: Syed Modi International, Swiss Open and Singapore Open.
