New Delhi, Nov 15: The Badminton World Tour Finals has been moved from Guangzhou to Bangkok due to the Covid-19 pandemic in China. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) announced on Tuesday that the event will start a week earlier and will be held from December 7 to 11.

Concerns are being raised about the Asian Games, which have been postponed until 2023 due to the cancellation of sporting events in China. The continental competition was scheduled to be held in Hangzhou in August 2022.

“The BWF, in consultation with the Chinese Badminton Association (CBA), has agreed to postpone the 2022 HSBC BWF World Tour Final due to various challenges caused by the current pandemic,” the BWF said in a statement.

The Badminton Association of Thailand was also praised by badminton’s international governing body for offering an alternative venue “at such late notice”.

Bangkok’s Nimibutr Arena will now host the BWF World Tour Finals. Due to stadium availability and venue change, the event will start earlier.

The season-ending BWF World Tour Finals will feature the top 8 players and pairs. The BWF will publish the final list of eligible individuals and teams on November 22 after the Australian Open.

Notably, India’s PV Sindhu pulled out of the competition to give herself more time to heal from a stress fracture. Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth are unlikely to qualify as they did not play in the Australian Open. HS Prannoy will be the only Indian entrant in the popular end-of-season tournament.
